I'm currently reading "The Astronomy Book" on kindle and the amount of answers and detailed knowledge you get is facinating. I just went through the section that explains how we can figure out distances. It's based on brightness and colour of the stars, and while I can't remember specifics off the top of my head, Orion is one of the closer ones. Still 1,000+ lightyears away but some shit we can detect and see is over 30,000,000,000 lightyears away.
