The governor of Russia's Omsk region announced Monday that only one private medical clinic in the vast Siberian territory is still providing abortion services.
The announcement from Gov. Vitaly Khotsenko came after a meeting on state demographic and family policy.
"I will note that now in the Omsk region, there is only one private clinic left that provides pregnancy termination services," Khotsenko stated in a post on the Telegram messaging app. His remarks also highlighted the council's focus on "supporting student families, preventing abortions, [and] promoting family values."
Khotsenko did not provide a reason for the sharp decline in the number of private providers or comment on the availability of abortion procedures in state-run medical facilities.
The development in Omsk follows a broader trend across Russia. According to the independent news outlet "7x7," at least 22 other regions, including Bryansk, have recently enacted laws that prohibit "inducing" women to have abortions, part of a wider conservative push on social issues.
