If you take a Gnostic perspective on the teachings of Jesus, their message is easily the same thing. Consider: the world we inhabit is Hell, and Yaldabaoth (Satan/Yahweh) it its master. Going to Hell and being stuck in the cycle of reincarnation are the same thing. Escaping Hell requires eliminating our material desires (sin) that keep us attached to this plane of existence.
