Neither of them are in any way nihilistic and both are equally anti-materialistic. Believing in Christ doesn't just mean saying that you believe in him. It means dying in the flesh so that you can live in Christ. Which basically means leaving Plato's cavern, realizing that flesh is nothing more than shadows on the wall, and living in pursuit of Good and Truth rather than pleasure and wealth. It sounds like you're confusing modern misconceptions with the actual teachings.
