Top Russian Politician Threatens to Send Comedians to the Front Line Over a Joke, Then Calls Them Too Dumb to Fight
A Russian senator and former head of the country's space agency threatened to have two TV comedians mobilized and sent to the front lines in Ukraine after they made a joke about his doctoral dissertation, only to reverse course days later by declaring the comics "intellectually immature" and unfit for military service.
The bizarre saga began when Dmitry Rogozin, a hardline politician currently representing occupied Zaporizhzhia in Russia's senate, was targeted in a sketch by the comedy troupe "Negoden" (Russian for "Unfit") on the popular TV show KVN.
In the skit, a young astronaut about to launch into space is convinced to stay on Earth by his high school crush. When his comrade chastises him, saying, "Dude, you don't trade space for some chick," the astronaut asks, "Who said that?"
"That was in Rogozin's doctoral dissertation!" the comrade replies, a jab at the politician's academic credentials and famously bombastic style.
Rogozin, who holds doctorates in both philosophy and technical sciences, did not see the humor. In a since-deleted Telegram post, he fumed that he had already been informed "which military enlistment office these two humorists are registered with." He added, "We are now identifying the talentless piece of shit who writes their material."
The threat of using mobilization as a punishment sparked immediate backlash online. Faced with widespread criticism, Rogozin abruptly changed his tune.
"I want to reassure the representatives of the liberal public, lawyers, defender-bloggers, and other worked-up draft dodgers," he wrote in a new post. "These two jokesters from KVN do not interest us in any way due to their intellectual immaturity. They may be fit for stupid jokes, but not for defending the Motherland."
