What the recent Israel-Iran conflict mainly demonstrated to me is that the clergy can't be left in charge of Iran. The IRGC need to step their game up. Iran needs to secularize like Turkey, the IRGC needs to morph into a deep state and focus entirely on clandestine operations and intelligence. Then the political system can turn into a typical secular managed democracy, but not give power to pro-West reformists wholesale. Realistically, the Ayatollah won't go anywhere and could still be used to exert influence over Shia Muslims in the region, but the extraterritorial military activities look largely untenable at this moment.
