City run grocery stores is fucking stupid too. The profit margin is 3% and the NYC market on food is pretty damn competitive if you don't cherry pick midtown Manhattan prices. I probably pay less for groceries than you and during the worst of the egg crisis I was paying $9 a dozen with no limits. It makes sense for places that are food deserts from chronic crime and poverty like Baltimore and Philadelphia but you can step into any ethnic supermarket and pay less than your average Midwestern Kroger for fresh produce and meat
