dunno about "cool", but I remember noticing that subcultures died out in 2012, when smartphones became widespread. When I started high school in 2007 there were still goths, emos, metalheads, the cool party chicks, jocks, skaters etc. in the older grades. Then in 2012 when that generation had graduated everything became homogeneous and internet-based and the average teen became basically a proto-zoomer.
