America has actually held the south west territory for long than independent Mexico has. Mexico only held California and Texas for 30 years before they lost it to the US who has held it for almost 18” years at this point. This is of course not counting the Spainish colonization. Which if you’re using regional control as a metric California is really Spainish territory because they held it for like 250+ years
