The gap has tightened a lot in the last decade. I’d say they’re actually better at precision up to a certain price point, as in they can now hold +/- .003 tangents on a milled 5 axis aluminum part for a whole lot cheaper, with a a scrap rate that’s only about 1% or 2% higher. That was unthinkable twenty years ago. For really advanced stuff they’re still behind. They can do it but the scrap rate is way higher.
