That's Karl's biggest problem. He doesn't know what he doesn't know. He honestly thinks he's a genius and doesn't even consider that someone already tried this trick earlier and that the law takes this possibility into consideration. He also refuses to listen to people who actually know better and tell him not to do stupid shit like this and then announce it to the world.
