Because the Me262 outperformed all other fighters at the time. Yes it had limitations but those could have possibly overcome had development been prioritized. Every time a Luftwaffe general told him to make it a fighter he denied that. He wanted the jet to be a bomber that could strike London etc.
Basically he had no concept of winning the air superiority battle. He should have built aircraft carriers instead of big battleships.
