White masculinity in music definitely died in the late 90s. In the early-mid 90s we had Metallica and Pantera topping the music charts down here. Even though Metallica got haircuts and went soft and slow in the 90s they were still way more masculine that what followed.

Definitely the growling. I like metal, but the stuff with low growling like that just doesn't do it for me. Slayer and Terror-style vocals really does it for me though.
