I think part of the problem is the decline in drinking culture. Nobody really says this explicitly, but one of the main reasons to drink is to cut the tension for interactions with women. IT'S THE PRIMARY REASON.
You don't have to be a drunk, but if you're unwilling to utilize an age old tool so that you can loosen up around women and have a conversation, then connect, then get laid, then you're just afraid to live I suppose
