Astronomer here....An asteroid the size of Apophis is not an extinction level event.
If it were to hit it would be somewhere from Antartica to Siberia, roughly with India somewhere in the crossairs. Depending on the pull of several other objects. This is the worst case, less than 1% . It all likelyhood it will graze the planet
But lets hypothesize and pretend it hits somewhere in India. The damage would not be felt anywhere in the new world except for atmospheric occlusion, which may cause crop failure but certainly not extinction
However to India, Pakistan, Nepal and anyone in that area, yeah it would be pretty rough. An area the size of Conneticut would get scortched. And an even bigger area the size of texas would be devestated.
