>isn't yiddish just mispronounced german?
Yes, and with sometimes screwy syntax in the same way old Jews sometimes phrase things weird in English like they're fucking Yoda. They turn every u into a short i. They turn au (pronounced like ou in ouch) into oy. All of the ch sounds are a hard and guttural KH. Then they throw in some Hebrew or some archaic German words. Certain groups of them throw in some Slavic to the point I think different groups of Jews have difficulty understanding each other.
Also, I don't think anyone under the age of 80 who speaks Yiddish grew up with or is familiar with standard German, so they probably won't know the correct German word to use in instances where they've substituted it with a Hebrew word.
If you go into one of their delis or shops, and they're speaking plainly, anyone who speaks German can understand them.
