I was there briefly in the late 80s, and then for a few months in the early/mid 90s, it was great. But everywhere was better before 2000. IRA bombs were still a thing, but mostly we just worried about pickpockets, like at certain Tube stations. We saw mostly white people, with some Indians, and a guy from Somalia or Ethiopia I think worked the desk in the building we were staying in. Technically, I think I'm still not supposed to donate blood due to possible mad cow disease, but I didn't even know that for years afterwards, but I haven't donated blood anyway so it doesn't matter.
