There is a very close relationship between economics and what a county intends to do (let's call it politics). Russia's economic form allowed it to maintain its current foreign policy, have rising inflation adjusted salaries and easily withstand being the most sanctioned country in the world. Would China, India, Turkey and the others keep buying stuff from Russia, if it exported easily replaceable cars and refrigerators instead? Who knows.
Meanwhile Germany is in a multi year recession without any sanctions.
