You'll get shot if you're caught trying to escape. And if you do manage to escape, then they'll torture your family to death. If China catches a defector, they'll send them back to NK where they'll likely be killed. Also, fewer and fewer people are managing to escape each year due to expanded border controls and surveillance. It's gone down from thousands to dozens.
