Assuming birth control was invented as a concept and then people found reasons and arguments to favour it seems incorrect. Avoiding indulgence/excessive pleasure is as old as the Temple of Delfos. Meanwhile, plenty of greeks would just abandon unwanted children to die without any remorse.
