To my knowledge, a simple metal detector or a specialized version of it would work - it should be able to detect ferromagnetic metals. Considering MRI machines are involved in fatal (and expensive) accidents regularly, one is surprised by the lack of additional security layers.

I must admit I know almost nothing of electrical engineering - but if you know exactly where the magnetic field ends, it should not be that big of an issue to lay the cables (and appropiate ones) accordingly.
The only useful info I can add is that the field isnt that big. The room would have to be really small for the sphere to reach the ceiling.
