It's actually not the same as Chrome. It's probably the only one that is totally not Chrome. The code base comes directly from Netscape Navigator. In the 90s there was not really an alternative if you wanted to go onto the WWW. Then Microsoft came with it's bastard child of NSA Mosaic and gave it away for free, which meant Netscape went bankrupt. Its code lives on in Firefox.
