Japs were even dumber than Germans when it came to starting a war that they didn't even have an on-paper way of winning.
They read Mahan and had their Kantai Kessen or "decisive battle" doctrine, but didn't seem to understand that only wins you naval superiority, not the war. You still have to leverage that superiority to make the enemy capitulate.
Even if they got their decisive battle, and won, and btfo of the entire US Pacific Fleet, it still wouldn't have won Japan the war, cause theere was no follow up plan. Just wishful thinking that their enemy will surrender cause reasons.
