Technology probably makes men worse at war and strategic thought, in the same way it has made sports less interesting. Technology leads to minmaxxing which is not really in the spirit of Mars or Champion warfare which the human race developed to revere.
Ancient men probably were harder though considering every army had to be physically hacked down up close. It’s not really comparable to mindlessly blasting away with shells and maybe you don’t even know you die, or firing away at a horde of attacking infantry.
You see the eyes of the man who killed you and you see the eyes of every man you kill. It would be much more psychologically taxing.
Not to mention physically where if you falter for even a moment you are laid low.
But you can trip and fall and screw around in modern warfare.
It was 100% death in the past. Today it’s really only death if you physically trip onto a land mine or into an enemy, which is rare compared to how often you could fall or trip (from being tired) overall.

Today being sore and weak isn’t that bad. Back then if you needed even a second’s respite before lifting your shield it was over.
Not so today.
