For years they weren't even seen as 'bad guys', all the way up to the 90s even they were just seen as a standard combatant and were depicted as being neutral, slavery was barely brought up. Their flag and symbols were even seen as perfectly fine to use. Then around the 2000s the entire confederacy slowly became a grand evil in the likes of the German Reich. I know the reason behind this is because America started to worship niggers, and therefore any state formed to oppose automatically becomes the great satan, but it's still weird that out of all regimes this is the one that they hate secondmost.
