Simon of Cyren
Read:
“It was another, their father, who drank the gall and the vinegar; it was not I. They struck me with the reed; it was another, Simon, who bore the cross on his shoulder. It was another upon whom they placed the crown of thorns. But I was rejoicing in the height over all the wealth of the archons and the offspring of their error, of their empty glory; and I was laughing at their ignorance.”
- Second Treatise of the Great Seth (NHC VII,2)

These gnostics (Mandaeans and Manichaeans) were basically offshoot cults of the earliest christians (ones who witnessed his "resurrection") that had to flee to iraq and iran to avoid persecution as heresies to the later mainstream roman belief that jesus returned from the dead.
These christian cults believed others had been crucifed in jesus place. Their sacrifices were to protect jesus. And the resurrection was jesus presenting himself as still alive to his followers after others had been sacrificed for him.
Muhammad lived outside mecca, saidia arabia, south of iraq and part of a very active trade route that would have mixed with a variety of types. Most likely he mixed with these early offshoot christians and learned their version of the bible.
