Our self defence laws are actually more robust than Americas, ok we don't have guns but the fact remains we have better laws than them, even tough they won't admit it.
For example:
They boast about their 'Castle Doctrine' but that only exists in 28 of the 50 statess . . .. we have the equivalent throughout England and Wales (not sure about Scotland, they have different rules)
We have No duty to retreat and we don't need to wait for the first punch, we can strike first 'Provided you have genuine belief' for your or others safety . . .Americans have to prove they were at threat, we only have to prove 'a belief' this makes a big difference in court.
Just like the so-called 'Red States' in the USA we can also use lethal force but it must be reasonable . . .. this is, if you knock the guy unconscious to the ground, that's fine but if you continue to lay the boot in, then that's not good.
it's true we cannot carry anything for self-defence but anything can be used, if you are really interested I could tell you more but it's worth checking things out.
