That's the attitude of businesses today. If no one will pay their high prices, then they'd rather go out of business than lower their prices and make less profit.
Business and markets are not rational. They can be sort of rational for a while under the right circumstances, but even then many businessmen, great and small, value power and dominance over profit.
Markets need heavy regulations to keep them from falling apart. British liberalism was always naive with its assumption that people are rational actors and that businesses and government can be kept apart.
