It's feasible, enact a total ban on the sale, manufacture and posession of firearms and ammunition punishable by summary execution. Most people surrender theirs. A few cities hold out and are destroyed with aerial bombardment or nuclear weapons. There are bounties placed on turning anyone in who has suspected caches of weapons. Everyone's bank, socials, phone and computer is scanned by AI for evidence of gun ownership or gun adjacency.

It becomes immediately impossible to buy a gun. The remaining guns are machines and will wear out, rust and corrode. Ammunition contains chemicals and decays. In a few generations there will be hardly any left.
