It's not even that you need to make guns illegal or force people to turn them in. The problem is that if gun ownership is a sacred right then even the lowest IQ degenerate ghetto trash or mentally ill schizo is just as worthy of owning a gun as a responsible, competent adult with no drug or debt issues.
Your dad isn't going to meet mexican gangbangers under a bridge to sell him pistols out of his trunk. This stuff is extremely rare in countries with more stricter requirements. Gun owners aren't selling guns on the black market which is why criminals have to import them from abroad which makes illegal guns way more expensive than legal ones.

I support tipping the balance in favor of responsible adults ownership and less toward unworthy or dangerous ownership. There are a lot of European countries with fairly high gun ownership, yet low levels of gun violence.
Self-defense is a good reason to own guns, but not everyone is worthy of the responsibility that comes with owning a dangerous weapon. (And yes it should be the same with cars)
