That doesn't make almost-obliterating the entirety of existence a good idea, or something that people actually want.

Some of the most famous and beloved sci-fi franchises show an advanced world where technological supremacy has resulted in a totalitarian surveillance dystopia where the hero DESTROYS that system, not builds it.
He sets people free from that system, and the forces implementing it are the evil villains everyone wants to see lose and/or die.
