Actually no. When I studied English, I specifically avoided Americans and started from children's books such as Winnie-the-Pooh and Harry Potter and later studied Cambridge Grammar of English and read Early Modern English such as Hamlet. I watched only British TV series and films. Listened to the British radio stations online.
I use the loose American way of speaking now sometimes because it is funny.
