it's because the information space has been hacked and vast majority of people simply do not have the knowledge and/or intelligence required to navigate it. bad actors psychologically 1 shotted huge number of people through automated lying system.
just 20 years ago it was completely normal to get ALL of your information about what's going on from the TV or newspaper. many people are even still stuck in this mode. these people all went online expecting what they see to be professionally curated content where people face consequences for lying to an extent. they did not expect to be fed a bunch of lies made up by anonymous subhumans and bots. they still don't.
this is the sole reason why russia gets to do what they do instead of getting wiped off the face of the earth.
