i guess in some ways you could say that makes it a leftist film, considering the state he is going up against is an explicitly fascist one, but i think the broader theme of one man fighting for his freedom and reputation against the shadowy figures that have power to manipulate the reality most of the population experience has much deeper resonances with the fight against tyranny that has been ever present within human society, and was exemplified by the founding fathers of the united states. at heart it's a film about liberty and truth.
