A surge in solo female travellers from Russia to Turkey is being linked to the soaring popularity of Turkish television dramas. A joint study by Russian streaming service KION and travel company Level.Travel found that 77% of Russians believe the country's television series have directly fueled interest in visiting Turkey.
According to the report, single women now account for half of all Russian tourists in Turkey. The demographic most drawn to Turkish resorts is women between 31 and 44 years old, with many reportedly hoping to find a partner during their travels. The trend extends to older age groups as well, with the number of solo female travellers over 45 showing notable growth. Over the past three years, the overall share of Russian women travelling alone to Turkey has increased by 2%.
The phenomenon is part of a broader cultural exchange, with 142 different Turkish television series currently available on Russian streaming platforms. Series such as "Muhteşem Yüzyıl" ("Magnificent Century"), "Sen Çal Kapımı" ("Love is in the Air"), and "Yalı Çapkını" ("Golden Boy") have become household names in Russia. One show, "Sen Çal Kapımı," was among the top three most popular series in Russia in 2021 and became the most-watched in 2022.
Survey participants described the shows as a form of escapism, offering a "visual source of attractive local colour with a beautiful cast." More than half of those polled admitted they would like to be a character in a Turkish series for a day.
The cultural impact is reflected in tourism figures, with a projected 7 million Russian tourists expected to visit Turkey this year, up from 6.7 million in 2024.
