A Russian man accused of murdering and dismembering a woman and her six-year-old son has avoided a potential life sentence by signing a contract with the Ministry of Defence to fight in Ukraine.
Aleksandr Gook, a 48-year-old lawyer from the city of Serov in the Sverdlovsk region, was in pre-trial detention facing charges for the murder of two people, including a helpless minor, after his arrest earlier this year. However, a court confirmed on October 29 that Gook would not have his detention extended as he had enlisted for the "Special Military Operation."
The case dates back to November 2024, when 42-year-old Olga Soroka and her son visited Gook, with whom she was reportedly in a relationship. Investigators believe that during a drunken argument, Gook pushed the child, who fell, struck his head, and died. He then allegedly killed Soroka to eliminate her as a witness.
The crime was discovered in April 2025 after locals found Soroka's head in a community garden. Gook was subsequently arrested and, according to police, confessed to the killings. He admitted to dismembering the woman's body and disposing of the parts in various locations, and said he placed the child's body in a dumpster; the boy's remains have not been found.
