The South were also using medieval weapons near the end of the Civil War when they ran out of bullets. Though I went to a real 1800's fort near the Canadian border. They had 2 jail cells that looks like a county jail. But before that, they had a hole for a dungeon. They kept it for storage and in case they ran out of jail space.
