Before there was not the technological means to have such large amounts of people moving around and any doing it were usually rich so Christians doing Christian things weren't able to cause too much damage as it would only apply to a couple of people. With millions coming applying this bronze age view to it is simply massively outdated and they won't update it because "the bible says...".
