Not a very good comparison. Eastern Ukraine was part of Russian Empire even way before Soviet Union. YUGE importance for Russia. Even if they manage to achieve what they wanted in Ukraine, they've got Armenia and Khazahstan to worry about next. Even Belorussians are pandering to NATO a little bit now. Eastern Russia becomes vulnerable. Setting up the same exact stage as before the Russo-Japanese war.
You underestimate how badly China wants it. The Taiwan thing might just be MacGuffin Effect and that it's not what they REALLY want to do. Very large part of Siberian land was previously occupied by Qing Dynasty(Outer Manchuria) and they are already doing heavy demographic pressure in there. China wants to heavily arm that place so that Japan finally give up their dream of repeating of Nanking history shit and remove Kim and denuclearize North Korea.
Russia knows it's better to just cede that on some condition favorable to them than creating another YUGE problem in the east. They can't afford to have 4 war fronts at the same time. They also got Kuril island dispute with Japan.
