>when I started in tech, people learned on the job
I think that's pretty universal on every field. Degrees are just dumb gatekeeping, any job can be learnt in a fraction of the time it takes to get one. Most of the jobs I could hypothetically perform with my degree could be done by any sub 90 IQ as long as they were literate. I have forgot most of the theoretical knowledge my career taught me and it does not make a difference (mainly because I don't even get called for interviews). One way or another you americans got my sympathies. My country is overrun with it's own immigrant flavor that enjoys being basically a bunch of serfs and larp about the grind and shit while having degrees from third world universities, so probably I would not have a chance even if I signed up a good career.
