It's unironically because from the PG era onwards it's been actively catering to freaks, overgrown children, autismos, twitter addicts, literal retards, and so on, and has its own insular little world that allows these people to show themselves as fans without any gatekeepers to keep them in check. You can see it from the bright colors to the storylines to the way they deliver their promos to the commentary to the commercial breaks etc. Much like MLP or Steven Universe enables these freakazoids. It's not so much that the show itself is awful, but this is clearly who they've appealing to, and they know it. Not even the trailer park hillbillies from the early days were this bad.
