>Seri Yamaoka (18), the super rookie of women’s pro wrestling promotion Marigold, spoke about her mindset as she aims to win her first singles league title in the Dream Star GP. She also shared her thoughts on Super Fly Champion Mayu Iwatani (32).
...
>Although she lost to Yuzuki, whom she saw as a rival, Seri gained great confidence by giving Iwatani her first loss in Marigold. “I’ve watched that match over and over. I’d been thinking constantly about what my pro wrestling really is. But when I fought Mayu-san and landed my finisher at the end, for the first time I felt like, ‘Ah, this is my pro wrestling.’ In a way, that match with Mayu-san was the first step in my pro wrestling life,” she reflected.
>In fact, it was also Iwatani’s presence that led Seri into pro wrestling in the first place. When her sister, Miyabi Yamaoka, applied for the lead role in the autobiographical film “Runaway Wrestler” about Iwatani, released last year, Seri began watching pro wrestling and set her sights on becoming a wrestler herself. “I learned about pro wrestling because Mayu-san was there, and I had something to aim for,” she said. “Since I’ve beaten Mayu Iwatani this time, I want to go after the Super Fly title in earnest, so I’m cutting weight now. Of course I want to win the league, then wear the red belt (World Championship) and the white belt (United National Championship) too. But I’ve been interested in the Super Fly title ever since Yuzuki-san was holding it.”
>Seri’s momentum toward the top of the women’s wrestling world shows no signs of slowing. “In the end, I want people to say, ‘When you think of women’s pro wrestling, you think of Seri Yamaoka,’ and I have a dream of wrestling Giulia (of WWE). I’ll win the Dream Star and work hard to reach that dream right away,” said the young fighter, clenching her fist.
