Southern Appalachia. Don't forget nuclear winter and nukes in the ocean flooding the ENTIRE goddamn coast in radioactive tsunamis. A LOT of dikes and dams got utterly wrecked because of it. Especially in the south which was already very prone to wetlands. Your people were high enough in the foothills and mountains that they got to avoid the worst of it. The terrain changes are otherwise not small.
