It's not really free though because the loan has to go towards the house. The opportunity cost is huge. If I gave you a loan to buy copper, it's not free money, because you probably would have made more money in the long run buying a better asset rather than paying down your copper loan. Renting is cheaper, even ignoring the saved money on maintainence costs, taxes, etc.
