Honestly, the whole thing is very depressing for me having studied the language now going on 20 years (no seriously my first German class in HS was the fall of 2005) and that in HS I was considered one of the better speakers in class when it was most just rote memorization rather than actual conversational skills. Didn't help the teacher massively played favorites and I was her little pet.
