So much talk about how big the world is feels like putting the cart before the horse. I realize it's so cliche to the point it appears npc'ish but since getting really into plants I probably talk about the weather way too much. But who gives a shit about traveling to Europe or Asia when you can travel to the same property your house is on and there are hundreds of microclimates, each elevation, depression, rock, tree, being just one of a gorillions elements and aspects of it. The area between forest and plain is incredibly interesting, especially when you get into purposely manipulating.
You might have a wind break of evergreens to protect sensitive plants, but further south of the screen hardier plants, while still needing protection, they are better able to withstand the lesser protection as a result of the distance. A place for everything. If a slope faces north or south makes all the difference for peaches. A couple warm days and they're setting buds only to see them die next frost. But colder air flows down a northern slope, and the peach trees are below the air-of-cold-temperature level, and so they will wait to bud.
The number of species of bugs, flowers, birds, mammals, trees, grass, bushes, fungi, etc. I doubt most people learn even ten percent of the life in their own little area. So again, what will you see abroad when you don't even see at home?
