I would again disagree. If it's worth reading about it's probably not a first time fresh experience but something the author is familiar with to some degree. The familiarity in some part is due to books.
For experiencing first hand, the problem is one of ignorance, not intelligence. Given enough time it is possible of course to reach a similar level of expertise firsthand, but reading dramatically shortens the time required. Like I said with architecture, I might be able to get something from visiting a special example. A cool cave with rocks in it? I don't know much about geology so the experience would be less interesting if I don't learn about it more before going.

Who cares about average? Given that pretty much all books worth anything we're written by men suggests books are a male dominated interest. Looking at the readers it's undeniably a sausagefest. Women don't really read much outside of smut but that's just being horny, not being into books. I mean maybe you can find a weird girl into literature, but literature is read for the story which is very different from a nonfiction nonhistory book.
