I didn't choose to be ostracized and bullied though. That's another negative aspect of self improving in your youth - while you're studying/practicing/training, or away from school because of competitions, the guys who don't have any hobbies and just go to classes are building rapport. There is no surefire way to get accepted by a group. You can be kind and never wrong anyone yet still be targeted by bullies. Because unlike academia, sports, music, etc, socialising is neither fair nor deterministic.
