Obviously nobody likes being covered in shit. Nobody here is claiming that medieval people were oblivious to shit or enjoyed being covered in shit. But they lived in a time where soap was more of a rarity, and was just pure tallow and ash and smelled just as bad as the shit that was being cleaned. They lived in a time without the showers or toilets of today. None of them had bidets or wet wipes. Food sanitation didn't exist. They didn't have fridges. They didn't have sinks in their kitchens. There were flies everywhere, all of them were getting into the shit that was everywhere so even if you cleaned yourself of it, there'd still be flies spreading it all over and not much to do about it.
