There's a bit of truth to it. Trump runs laps around Hillary (Kamala too) when it comes to relating to the average voter, speaking on their level and understanding how they feel. People don't like to be lectured to with SAT words because it comes off as condescending, which Democrats are very prone to doing.
I had a political science course in college that was taught by my state's former governor, who was also a Congressman for awhile. He told us you never want to be portrayed as the "smart one" in a race because that loses you more votes than it wins. You could tell he was a smart guy but he never wanted to be depicted that way in elections.
